John McCain is getting help from all sorts of unexpected places. He was endorsed by that great paper of record The New York Times. And some guy named Bill Clinton had these soothing words to say about any election pitting Hillary against McCain.

She and John McCain are very close…They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they’re afraid they’d put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other.

Ah! We have at long last arrived at our political rapture! All will be sweetness and light! A true love fest where policies about ‘global warming’ and taxes and campaign finance and immigration and big government and abortion will be the same!

Another ‘era of good feelings’ has become possible. An era of Barney-like paens of ‘I love you and you love me’ will be heard from every political platform.

Why then would one prefer one candidate to the other? What would be the point in voting for the Republican anyway? McCain is in all essentials a liberal Democrat.

There would be no point in voting Republican. That itself is the point.
